The Art of Life – Part 2

Echoes of the Forest: A Rural Childhood in Northern Quebec

In the heart of Northern Quebec, where crisp air meets sprawling landscapes, lies a secluded rural town framed by lush fields and dense woodlands. Here, life unfolds at a gentler pace, dictated by the rhythm of the seasons and the whispers of the wind. This untouched haven shaped my formative years, a tale of resilience, self-discovery, and an enduring connection to the natural world.

Growing up in this remote corner was both a blessing and a challenge. The endless golden fields and towering forests became my sanctuary, offering solace amidst family conflicts and personal struggles. I found companionship and clarity within the rustling leaves and melodic birdsong—a silent, profound reflection of my innermost thoughts. These moments of stillness, immersed in nature’s beauty, became my refuge and the wellspring of my inspiration.

The vibrant tapestry of life around me provided boundless lessons. Spring, with its explosion of colours and sounds, unfolded as a symphony of renewal. The hum of bees, the songs of returning birds, and the blooming wildflowers revealed nature’s resilience and intricate beauty. These experiences instilled in me a deep reverence for the wisdom and wonder of the natural world.

As I grew up, these lessons became the cornerstones of my life. Nature’s grace and untamed spirit nurtured my resilience and creativity, guiding me through life’s trials. Though my journey eventually led me far from my rural hometown, the echoes of the forest remained within me, a constant source of strength and inspiration.

The Spark of an Artistic Journey

My artistic journey began during those early years, gradually evolving through life’s chapters. A pivotal moment came during my first marriage, when my husband, an avid photographer, introduced me to the art form. My fascination with cinema, particularly the timeless allure of black-and-white films, found a new outlet in photography. Becoming the subject of his lens ignited a shared passion, laying the foundation for my creative path.

Reflecting on my travels to Europe and beyond, I see how these experiences became seeds of artistic growth. As a photographer, I approached each destination with a sense of wonder, deliberately setting aside preconceived notions. This openness allowed me to capture each scene with spontaneity, akin to falling in love at first sight—a magical moment that sparks creativity and discovery.

From Belgium to Montreal

After the dissolution of my marriage in Belgium, I returned to Canada as a single woman, ready to embrace new challenges. Immersed in the dynamic advertising industry, I found fertile ground for my artistic aspirations. Balancing a creative role with photography studies at the Dawson Institute of Photography in Montreal, I honed my craft. This journey led to capturing corporate portraits for esteemed clients like Air Canada and organizing humanitarian campaigns, deepening my belief in art as a catalyst for positive change.

One transformative experience was organizing a charity ball for the Foundation for Battered Children at Montreal’s Ritz-Carlton Hotel. Inspired by attending the Vienna Opera Ball with my mother, this endeavour merged creativity with humanitarianism. The event’s success reinforced my commitment to using art to inspire and uplift humanity.

From Montreal to New York

In 1989 my journey took a significant turn when I joined the United Nations in New York. Immersed in a vibrant international environment, I encountered extraordinary individuals, including the late Audrey Hepburn. Her humility and dedication to UNICEF’s humanitarian mission left an indelible mark on me. This chapter solidified my belief in art’s power to connect people across cultures and promote meaningful change.

From the serene landscapes of Northern Quebec to the dynamic halls of the United Nations, my journey has been a tapestry woven with nature’s wisdom, artistic exploration, and a commitment to making a difference. Through it all, the echoes of the forest remain my guiding light, a reminder of where it all began.
