From Montreal to New York: A Journey of Renewal
Following the end of my marriage in 2009, I returned to the United Nations in New York, embarking on a transformative journey that blended professional dedication with artistic rediscovery. Amid the vibrant energy of New York City, I found inspiration in its cultural diversity, dynamic pace, and human connection, which fueled both my career and creative pursuits.
The transition was not without challenges. Leaving behind 17 years of a gilded yet confining lifestyle, I embraced a path of self-reinvention. This journey of personal growth taught me resilience and the importance of surrendering to the flow of life. Forgiveness became a cornerstone of my transformation, as I released past resentments and embraced the freedom to craft a future defined by authenticity. As Nelson Mandela said, “Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies.”
Upon relocating to New York, I was embraced by a global family of friends, their cultural richness reflecting the city’s unique spirit. Working in the Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General at the United Nations immersed me in a world of international diplomacy. My role involved news monitoring and interacting with UN correspondents, offering me a front-row seat to global events. Among the many remarkable individuals I encountered was Stefano Vaccara, founder of La Voce di New York, whose friendship and support of my artistic endeavours remain invaluable.
Artistic Exploration in the City That Never Sleeps
New York City's cultural tapestry became the backdrop for my artistic evolution. Despite the demands of my UN career, I nurtured my creativity, drawing inspiration from the city's museums, parks, and eclectic neighbourhoods. This environment birthed two notable art exhibitions:
"Women of New York" is a heartfelt tribute to 15 remarkable women from diverse backgrounds, each carving their path through life's challenges in the bustling metropolis. Through intimate portraits and compelling interviews, this series celebrates the resilience, strength, and individuality of their stories, inspired by the compassion and courage of my late mother. This powerful exhibition found its home at the United Nations, where it honoured the spirit of determination and the beauty of diversity.
"Men of New York": Celebrating the diverse male voices that enriched my journey, this series captured their depth and character through candid portraits and conversations.
These exhibitions underscored the unifying power of art to transcend cultural boundaries, fostering connection and understanding. They also illuminated the essence of New York: a city defined by its mosaic of people and their collective spirit.
Cultural and Culinary Highlights
Life in New York wasn’t solely about work and art—it was also about embracing the city's vibrant social and culinary scene. Favourite spots like Avra, a cozy Greek restaurant, and Pastis, a Parisian-style brasserie in the Meatpacking District, became havens of laughter and reflection. Waterside Plaza, my final residence, introduced me to The Water Club’s Crow’s Nest, a serene floating bar offering respite along the East River.
A Legacy of Growth and Connection
My time in New York culminated in 2017 with my retirement from the United Nations. As I prepared to return to Canada, I reflected on the profound experiences that shaped my journey. From working at the heart of international diplomacy to creating art that celebrated human connection, these years were a testament to resilience, renewal, and the transformative power of creativity.
Even as I bid farewell to the bustling city, its cultural richness and the friendships I cultivated remain etched in my heart. This chapter of my life affirmed my belief in the power of art and community to bridge divides, celebrate diversity, and inspire collective growth.
